Ashwagandha, also known as Indian Ginseng, is one of the most highly regarded herbs in Ayurveda and been used for centuries to promote health and relieve stress, fatigue and boost the immune system. Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb used in Ayurveda to help rebalance the system when the body is tired, stressed and fatigued. It acts as an all round tonic so perfect if you are feeling run down, burnt out and been burning the candle at both ends.

It has been widely used for centuries and in Ayurveda, and is the most famous and effective herbs with adaptogenic benefits. Adaptogens are substances that help your body’s ability to deal with stress or a change in environment. They also help the body cope with external stresses such as toxins in the environment and internal stresses such as anxiety and insomnia.

Ashwagandha works on rebalancing the whole system so also acts as an anti-inflammatory, boosts the immune system, improves the memory, reduces anxiety and depression, stablises blood sugar, helps with energy and sleep, and enhances sexual performance and the reproductive system. Ayurveda uses Ashwagandha particularly for its building, strengthening, and nourishing properties and for balancing Vata and Kapha doshas.

Ashwagandha is traditionally taken at night time in a cup of warm milk with some honey. 1-3 grams daily is the recommended daily dose but can be increased. As with all adaptogenic herbs the full effects are felt over a period of time so taking it consistently for a month and then taking a break is the ideal protocol.
