Used for centuries in Ayurveda it one of the few safe herbs to take to help digestion and as a laxative. It is non addictive and naturally helps your body without any harmful side effects. Triphala is a common herb used in Ayurvedic medicine that has been used for thousands of years. Traditionally used as a bowel tonic, it’s often prescribed as a mild laxative. Unlike other herbal or medicinal laxatives it is not addictive or bad for your body, it works with your body to help elimination and also to balance the entire system. So it is safe to use over a long period of time and is often used during long Ayurvedic detoxes known as Pancha Karma.
While its laxative qualities are most widely known, Triphala has many other health benefits. The name Triphala means “the three fruits” and it’s comprised of the Indian fruits amalaki, haritaki, and bibhitaki. Each one has a balancing effect on the body and the 3 doshas so is suitable for everyone to use.
Amalaki the Indian gooseberry, has been one of Ayurveda’s prized rejuvenators since ancient times. It’s been shown to help lower cholesterol and is loaded with vitamin C. While appropriate for all doshas it’s particularly effective for balancing Pitta.
Haritaki is known as the Tibetan "king of medicine." It’s believed to have a variety of positive health effects on the heart and brain. It can be used as a laxative by itself, but also has an anti-diarrheal treatment. It’s an anti-inflammatory and is calming to Vata.
Bibhitaki is another powerful ancient rejuvenator with detoxifying qualities on the blood, muscles, and fatty tissue of the body. Bibhitaki is very useful with conditions involving excess mucous in the system and is also good for quality bone formation. This fruit is known as “the one who keeps away disease” owing its name to the multiple benefits it has on Kapha.
As you can see, each component of Triphala is beneficial to all of the doshas and everyone’s constitution. The biggest impact it has relates to digestion. This mixture encourages balanced, full elimination, by pulling stagnated Ama or (toxic residue) from the digestive tract and increasing the colon’s absorption functions.
Triphala promotes digestive regularity. This is hugely beneficial to so many people as our diets and digestive systems are often not functioning optimally. It’s also very important for anyone who suffers from irregular elimination and other forms of bowel disease. Safe, non toxic, non addictive and good for you. Thank you Triphala!
